How can i tell my ipod shuffle is really charging when my computer is awake?

When i first plug in my new ipod shuffle with my USB cable into my computer, all i see is orange lights blinking 3 times then the light fades out and nothing happens from there, no light after those 3 blinks of orange lights. Does this mean my ipod shuffle is charging or is there a problem with my ipod?
